Most sheets are in the 200-300 range(which are also good), while expensive sheets are between 500 and above. The higher the thread count, the softer and more durable the sheets are.
TIPS:
1. Hold up a sheet to the light to determine its quality. Light will not shine through a high-thread-count sheet.
2. High-thread-count sheets won't fuzz or pill. Scratch the sheet with your fingernail to see if any pill comes off. It's less than 500 if any pill comes off the sheet.
